How to Combine Experiences and Accommodation in Bókun

Selling Experiences and Accommodation On Your Website

Bókun allows you to combine multiple ‘experiences’, but does not allow you to combine ‘experiences’ and ‘accommodation’, this is not a feature Bókun has at the moment. But, we want our visitors to pay with 1 transaction only.

There is a workaround for travel companies who wish to offer this service to their visitors!

Solution for Bokun

Currently, the only way to do this is by setting up a shopping cart option, where the visitor can add any number of experiences and accommodation to the shopping cart and pay for the total on a checkout page.

Summary Setup

  1. Setup a new booking channel in Bókun.
  2. Create 4 new widgets in Bókun – Accommodation, Experiences, Checkout and Shopping Cart.
  3. Add a visible shopping cart to your website (usually in the menu area at top of page) – this will display the total amount added to the cart.
  4. Create a checkout page on your website – To display all the items added to the cart and then allow the visitor to make 1 payment.
  5. When a booking is made on accommodation or an experience using the ‘book’ button, the page should redirect to the checkout page.

What are Booking Channels?

A booking channel is ideal when you have multiple websites, affiliates or have partners who you wish to give a booking engine to. For example, a local hotel. Basically, when you receive a booking – you will know directly where it came from.

Ok, let’s get started – Create a New Booking Channel

For info and online help – You can always visit the help page in Bokun.

  • From the cog wheel select Booking Channels.
  • Click on the blue Add button.
  • Give your booking channel a name. For this example, we could call it ‘MyWebsiteName Booking Channel’.
  • In the Payment Provider menu – select your payment company.
  • Make sure the shopping cart choice is checked.
  • Under the Main contact info at booking heading – Select the info you require from your visitors.
  • Save to complete the setup.

Create 4 New Widgets

Summary – we need to create 4 widgets, go to the cog wheel and select widgets from the menu. We will use this menu to create all of the widgets below.

TIP: Give you all your related widgets a starting name that is the same – this will group them together alphabetically. For example, MyCompanyName – Checkout, MyCompanyName – Shopping Cart etc.

  1. Checkout Widget
  2. Shopping Cart Widget
  3. Accommodation Selector Widget
  4. Experience Time Selector Widget

1. Create a Checkout Widget

  • Create a new checkout widget by selecting Add on the widget page and then select Checkout.
  • The 2 most important boxes to tick on this page are Show shopping cart and Allow removing from cart. Everything else is your choice. Don’t forget to enter an appropriate title – see TIP above.
  • You will also need to fill out the success, cancel and Timeout URL boxes. You can create those pages on your website and point to them from here.
  • Save when complete.

2. Create a Shopping Cart Widget

  • Create a new shopping cart widget by selecting Add on the widget page and then select Shopping cart.
  • Give it a title.
  • Tick the box – Allow removing from cart.
  • Display type: Cart Link (total items, amount) will display the total – which is ideal for a shopping cart in the header of your website!
  • URL to full cart – Enter the URL of the checkout page on your website.
  • Save

3. Create an Accommodation Widget

  • Create an accommodation widget by selecting Add on the widget page and then select Accommodation room selector.
  • Enter title
  • From the selection, After adding to cart – select Redirect to another page.

  • Create an experience widget by selecting Add on the widget page and then select Experience time selector.
  • Give it a title
  • After adding to cart setting – select Redirect to another page.
  • Checkout widget setting – Select the name of the checkout widget created earlier.
  • Redirect URL – select the name of your checkout page on your website.
  • Save

Setting Up Your Website

Ok, we are nearly there!  Bókun settings are now complete and we need to add some code to your website.

If you are confident about doing this yourself, then proceed. However, you may need extra help to ensure that nothing goes wrong – FIRST, MAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR SITE!

Here is what we’re going to do:

  • Generate widget code for your shopping cart.
  • Generate widget code for your payment page.
  • Create an accommodation product and use our new booking channel to generate widget code.
  • Create an experience and use our new booking channel to generate widget code.

Finally, we need to test the system!

Generating Widget Code for Shopping Cart

  • Navigate to the Widgets menu in Bókun.
  • Locate your newly-created shopping cart widget and select Embed widget.
  • From the drop down menu select your newly created Booking channel.
  • At the bottom of this page is Height and Width – You may have to experiment here with settings in order for the widget to fit your header, or wherever you plan to view the shopping cart.
  • Generate the embed code – And place it into your header or similar.

Generating Widget Code for Checkout Page

  • Navigate to the Widgets menu in Bókun.
  • Locate your newly-created checkout widget and select Embed widget.
  • From the drop down menu select your newly created Booking channel.
  • Generate the embed code – And place it into your checkout page of your website. If you are pasting this into a page, select text rather than visual.
  • That’s it!

Accommodation or Experiences

Similar to above you will select the embed widget from either accommodation or experiences, choose your new booking channel then your supplier and product. Generate your widget code and paste it into the location of your website where you wish to sell accommodation or experiences.

Important to Remember

The key here is to use your new booking channel in order for pages to be redirected to the checkout page.

Try to book your new products – You should see the shopping cart populate and be redirected to the checkout page.

Well done – You are now able to combine accommodation and experiences into 1 shopping cart payment!
